About Us

The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) is the largest and most influential association of military officers in the nation. We are an outspoken force for a strong national defense and represent the interests of military officers and their families throughout the course of their careers.

Purpose

The MOAA is an independent, nonprofit, and nonpartisan organization dedicated to providing expert advice and guidance to our members regarding compensation and benefits matters in the military community. The MOAA advocates a strong national defense, but is not involved in active military strategy. We may lobby, but our position as a tax-exempt organizations forbids us from participating or advocating for any particular political party, candidate, or group.

History

The MOAA was originally founded in Los Angeles, CA in 1929, with the goal of being able to provide advice and assistance to other military officers. When World War II came along, the organization moved its headquarters to Washington in 1944 in order to be a more active force on behalf of their members. Today the organization is comprised of 370,000 and offers a number of services, including benefits counseling, career transition assistance, and educational assistance for military families.

Leadership

A Board of Directors made up of 36 officers from the seven uniformed military services is elected to govern the organization. The board of directors then elect the Chairman of the Board and the three Vice Chairmen. The president, chief financial officer, and secretary are also elected by the Board of Directors from outside the Board membership.

Membership

Membership is available to any active duty or retired National Guard or Reserves officer, and former commissioned officers and warrant officers of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Public Health Service, and/or National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
